Signed the lease
Day 2, here, in sunny California. We've now walked the hills, biked downtown, enjoyed a wine-tasting bar, taken public transit to Berkeley, eaten spicy Indian food, drank fresh squeezed orange juice, watched two movies, bought drippingly ripe fruit from the local farmers' market, slept 12 and 10 hours a night, and signed a lease. Not bad for a couple of rural folk.
We'll be living in Jason and Kristen's apartment complex. The place is gorgeous. We are mighty happy. Lease starts June 15, and we'll be there probably a week later (gotta come home and get the stuff, you know).
Good Morning, El Cerrito
Tim and I are beginning our first full day in Cali, today, after sleeping like rocks for twelve hours last night. We flew out here for a one-week trip to see if we can sign some leases and rustle us up some jobs. Or rather, confirm that this is the place to be, and sign one lease. Just
seeing this place is confirmation enough for me... the air smells sweet, the streets are lined with gorgeous greenery, the hills are beautiful, and the "land of opportunity" looks real.
We're staying with Jason and Kristen, Tim's brother and sister-in-law. Their apartment complex is in El Cerrito, a suburb on the East side of the Bay from San Francisco. It's a beautiful, clean, spacious place, with inexpensive rent (for the area). Berkeley is just a bike ride away. It's also a short walk to a great street,
Solano, where we'll be finding some interesting jobs.
This place is close to everything (in the eyes of us New Hampshire folk), but feels more like a friendly neighborhood than a city. And two blocks away is a big hill with a eucalyptus grove and a clear view of the city. As soon as I pick up a compatible USB cable, I'll get those pictures right up here.
This morning we'll meet with their landlord to negotiate the price/availability of an opening in their complex. We both very much want to live here.
After that, we adventure to Berkeley, where I'll figure out how I can take a class there this fall.

Tim got the van. I'll get the site. Next, we're taking the United States.
Here, you'll be able to read about our adventures. We'll post whenever we wander into a Wi-Fi enabled coffee shop, airport, or university. Or when a sympathetic home offers us a shower, meal, and an hour online. Whatever the case, we'll be driving, and you just might want to know where we've been.
